Since 2001, the NGO Free Wheelchair Mission has been working for access to mobility for people with disabilities all over the world. One of their particularities is to transform garden chairs into wheelchairs with the means of each country, according to its economic situation.

The humanitarian organization Free Wheelchair Mission has been doing remarkable work for over twenty years to provide wheel chairs to people disabled developing countries. A real boost when you know that the precious armchairs can cost between 400 and 1000 euros for a classic, and up to 4000 euros for an electric one.

The NGO created by Laurie and Don Schoendorfer has invented a clever and inexpensive system: a wheelchair designed from garden chairs. The first model of its kind, GEN_1 was distributed in 2001 and allows its users to borrow uneven ground.

The latest version for 2019, GEN_3, now offers a foldable option to make the chair easier to transport.

An economical and clever wheelchair for the most disadvantaged

In a video summarizing the means implemented by the NGO, we learn that 75 million people in the world need a wheelchair. Except that many of these people do not have the economic means necessary to have one, while the country from which they come does not necessarily have the material means.

This is where Free Wheelchair Mission comes in. Taking into account the material resources of underdeveloped countries, the association designs solid and good quality wheelchairs from a simple salvaged garden chair and for less than 100 euros/dollars. The system is smart and creative and has already benefited over 1.3 million people in 93 countries around the world.
