Michael Farmer was walking around his property in Costa Rica when he stopped to look at something peculiar on the leaves of a guava tree: a small piece of metal that seemed to be moving. He picked it up to see what it was and quickly realized that he was holding in his hands a kind of extraordinary beetle.

Known under the scientific name of Chrysina limbata, this INSECT unique-looking chromatic shell played dead long enough for Farmer to capture some incredible footage of the reflective qualities of its shell. “I was stunned by her beauty. I have never seen anything like it” he said on social media. In several images, the beetle is seen acting as a mirror. The proof, we can even clearly see the photographer in the reflection of his shell. Michael Farmer notes the “totally flawless reflection of the beetle” .

An insect of plus in plus rare

Observations of these beetles are increasingly rare in Costa Rica , due to their dwindling population due to habitat loss and collectors, which makes this encounter all the more special. Luckily, Michael Farmer carefully put the insect back on a leaf and it was back to its freedom in no time at all, flying away right away. Although he is not a big fan of insects, he has been “Still amazed by this insect” and explain that it was “Truly one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. »
