After the discovery of 12 dead goats belonging to a herd a week ago, questions arose about the possible presence of wolves in the area.

It is in the town of La Penne-sur-Huveaune, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, not far from Marseille , that the attack took place. Goats were attacked while grazing freely.

The day after the attack on September 24 and 25, images captured by a thermal camera located near the goat grazing area showed the presence of a couple of wolves.

The presence of these wolves is consistent with the report of hunters issued in the Parc des creeks from Marseilles a few months ago. The two wolves had also been seen by hikers last winter before this rumor was confirmed.

The latest attack from these wolves, which could presumably be accompanied by wolf cubs, is more disturbing. This is the first time that it has taken place so close to Marseille, 300 meters from the village of La Penne-sur-Huveaune.

The Bouches-du-Rhône prefecture also indicated that the owner of the herd attacked would be compensated: “ The conclusion of the Departmental Directorate of Territories and the Sea (DDTM), after examination of the 12 victims, leads to the responsibility of one or more wolves because of the parts consumed, their mode of consumption and the characteristics of perforations on the neck. As a result, the owner of the herd will be compensated ».

In the meantime, cattle breeders are invited to bring in their animals as soon as night falls.
